The narrative voice of the book was conversational. I will also mention Van Loon’s cringe-worthy discussion of slavery in the Americas. It takes her about 4 volumes to get to the end of the USSR. I decided a few years ago that I wanted to read and own every Newbery Award Winner. Too bad the writing is horrible and the words are boring. Willemm are over I liked how accessable the writing style was but it is now difficult to determine what the author included as jokes, and what was really believed.
But as a story of mankind, as van Loon frequently reminds us that this is, it downright stinks. Of course the first thing I must mention was the dead chicken mankond Of course I am not surprised, but the older I get, the more I am irritated that such an important part of everyday life gets ignored by syory.

I’m not sure what inspired the Newbery committee gendrik choose a nearly page book with such an ambitious scope, and I really can’t see how this book would have gotten children excited about either reading or history.
You will learn many facts, but it is more important to “feel history” than to know it. I honestly think adults read it, and thought that children should, so they gave it the Newbery.
This sort of writing looks easy; it isn’t. However, there have to be better history books than this. Hendrik Willem van Loon was destined to be a lpon.

Van Loon only briefly takes a break from talking about the glories and splendors of Europe to talk about Buddha and Confucius in Asia. The Story of Mankind is the Newbery winner, and the first book to receive the award. Almost everything in the book is common knowledge, and requires little hendik any referencing.
