Performed with remarkable skill and very well recorded — indeed, with a suitably spacious perspective, this is a valuable document of some significant 20 th century music. Of all things not to call music, there’s things out there that are much less “music-like”.
But in retrospect, the “threshold” that the Four Songs crossed wasn’t only the event horizon that separates existence from non-existence, it was the door to a new kind of music that Grisey tragically would not have time to grissey.
