I can’t honestly say I liked it, but at least it wasn’t badly written. Opening as a wittily vitriolic look at the lives of the rich and powerful, over dinner at an ultra-swank Amsterdam restaurant, it kocb involved the teenage children of one of the diners and an offstage crime that is all the more horrible for never being brought into the full light.

Marc Schlosser is not your normal doctor. You can search out my one star virulent review for a few chuckles. I guess that’s the point. With the exception of the protagonist’s daughters and his wife all minor characterseverybody else in “Summer House With Swimming Pool” is… well… smarmy, except for the main c After reading two of his novels, I must confess that I am not a Hermann Koch fan. When I finish a book, I ask myself – would I read more from this author?
Obviously not suited to the career he has taken up as a doctor, he doesn’t really like his patients. Will he become a better father and husband and human, shedding his assholishness like a skin? Ralph and his wife are ugh. The story for the book seemed fairly insubstantial and pages were just filled with a string of mini-rants against all different types of people.
In the end, I was bored. He shouldn’t be a doctor. His reaction to the main event was most unlikely. I found myself skimming pages near the end to get on to something else more uplifting. It has little plot. It also worked because it was so compact, feeling much shorter than its actual length, basically a three hours’ journey into night. I’m not sure why exactly this book didn’t click for me. It is, however, a novel to be considered and read to give one a look at an interesting style and approach to the novel. Not a single character learns anything or becomes any better members of society. I’ve heard that the author’s book The Dinner is controversial but I’ve not read it. I wasn’t sure how Marc dealt with his situation, and surprisingly for how well the pacing was going through the rest of the book, the ending felt a bit rushed. Lechery, adultery, even pedophilia pervaded their Mediterranean break.
I enjoyed The Dinner I loved to hate Marc. It is simply unfocused.

Marc tells us immediately that his work as a doctor is largely show; he hates the human body, and describes procedures such as a prostate examination in ways calculated to turn the stomach. In fact, it is the question of honesty that so intrigued me in the book. But, the explanations of Ralph Meier’s medical practice didn’t have quite the same impact in “Summer House”.
